Big D's was a new stop for us. My parents had been with my Grandmother two years before, but for group outing, this was a new and crucial. It is close to Grand Isle, they actually had conch fritters (part of the mission could then be declared successful!), and the space is cheery with a stunning Bahama view.

After meals without a hint of conch (in fritter or cracked form), we were psyched to find a menu that presented a multitude of conch options.

You will also see that the menu listed lobster in a few styles.

Lobster season started officially on Emancipation Day (Monday) which meant that it would actually start on Tuesday. When Mom and I went for our routine morning walk around the bay and float in the calm cove, we accosted a fisherman offering to buy his first day's catch. He never did get his boat out that day. What this means is that when lobster season falls on Emancipation Monday, and actually starts on Tuesday, it logistically begins after you've ascertained if your boat is working, ordered the missing parts, waited for their arrival and installed them. From all of this, you may have guessed that we did not get lobster that day, the day after Emancipation Day.

The two baskets of conch fritters were received with whoops of glee. They had a tiny kick of spice with larger-grain chunks of conch that lingered in your mouth after the hush-puppy fried puff was gone.

Big D's gives you hot sauce which was great drizzled on these fried pockets of goodness.

The Cracked Conch was also great. It was the least rubbery rendition of this dish I had come across with a fine-grain batter coating.

Mom ordered the chicken thigh which was well-cooked and satisfying.

She also loved the Big D's version of Peas n' Rice which was less oily than many and with a more pronounced spice.

Finally, notice the macaroni are large in the salad and garnished with crisp, fresh green peppers.

Jack ordered the Conch Burger which you will see is Cracked Conch on a bun with thousand island dressing oozing lovingly out the side.

Finally, here is the view I mentioned... Amazing right?

Mr. Big D came out to meet us on our way to the cars. He is tall, friendly, and welcoming. I wanted to ask him a zillion questions about the restaurant, the area and everything else about food and prompt, clean service. Instead, I decided not to scare the owner of our new joint and wait till next time to quiz him. And yes, there will be a next time. Big D's was a revelation for us!
